Jakarta (ANTARA) - Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly called on the newly inaugurated Immigration Director General Silmy Karim to focus on and increase the speed of immigration services to attract investors to invest in Indonesia.

"(This is) especially to study several countries that have provided fast immigration services," he stated after inaugurating Silmy Karim as Director General of Immigration here on Wednesday.

Laoly noted that currently, immigration tasks are increasingly becoming more dynamic and developing. Hence, the newly inaugurated Director General of Immigration is expected to be able to follow strategic immigration developments.

He stressed that Karim must really pay attention to the speed of immigration services, as it is targeted to draw the interest of investors and talented people to visit Indonesia.

To this end, the Directorate General of Immigration is encouraged to make several changes that involve relevant stakeholders.

"The main key is through technology and digitalization," he remarked.

The minister conveyed several specific directives to the new Immigration Director General, including for coordination with ministries and other institutions regarding the golden visa policy to bring in investors and global talents to the country.

Secondly, he also reminded the new Immigration Director General to follow up on improvements in the Visa on Arrival (VoA) and Temporary Stay Permit (ITAS) services, reduction of illegal fees, and development of immigration services at airports that are opened for direct international flights.

The directions also include immigration services that support ease of doing business in Indonesia while still meeting the criteria for maintaining sovereignty, order, state security, and national interests.

On Wednesday, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Hamonangan Laoly appointed Silmy Karim as Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, replacing Widodo Ekatjahjana, who earlier served as Acting Director General of Immigration.

Before being appointed as the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim was the President Director of state-owned steelmaker PT Krakatau Steel Tbk. He has also served as President Director of state-owned weapons maker PT Pindad (Persero).
