Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - The Pidie Flood Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that thousands of people were still staying in shelters, as their houses remained submerged despite floodwaters in the district having started to recede.

Chief of the Pidie BPBD Muhammad Rabiul noted that 2,165 people from two sub-districts in Pidie were still living in shelters, as the houses they lived in were still submerged by floods caused by high-intensity rains.

Rabiul explained that the figure was a decrease as compared to 1,205 families, comprising 3,696 people, who had earlier taken shelter. Moreover, the number of flooded locations went down to six, those being Cot Tengoh, Keunire, Cot Reng, Blang Asan, Gampong Asan, and Tibang.

Three shelters in Pidie District are Meunasah Dayah Tutong in which 178 victims from 40 families reside; Sigli 2 State High School, with 240 Keuniree people from 50 families taking shelter; and Dayah Tgk Chik Dianjong, with 30 families taking shelter.

As many as 1,747 flood victims are still taking shelter in some posts in Sigli City, including the Blang Asan Meunasah and the Regional Government Mess.

Rabiul elaborated that there were 1,200 flood victims in Meunasah Gampong Asan, 525 people in Meunasah Lampoh Krueng and Gampong study centers, and 894 people in Beuringin Lambusoe and Tanjung Harapan.

He said a team from the national defense force, national police, the flood mitigation agency, and others at the flood site assisted all victims in evacuating since the area had become inundated.

Moreover, some roads were deemed dangerous due to collapse of the river cliffs, such as Gampong Baro Pulo Pisang, Klibeut, Ara Bungkok on Delima-Mila Street, on Kembang Tanjong Street, and Neulop Semen Teupin Raya.

Debris from the collapsed cliff caused by heavy river flow in Gampong Baro, Pidie District, was cleared using heavy excavators, and all the bamboo clumps that clogged the river were removed.

"With regard to damaged buildings, so far, we have yet to receive a report from the sub-district head. Maybe, it is still in the data collection stage," he concluded.
