Jakarta (ANTARA) - An increase in electricity consumption in 2022 demonstrated the good progress of Indonesia's post-COVID-19 economic recovery, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

"The good electricity growth proved that we have good economic growth. In 2022, we recorded 6.15 percent electricity growth, per (state electricity company) PT PLN consolidated numbers," the ministry's acting director general of electricity, Dadan Kusdiana, said.

He made the remarks at an event held to disseminate information on the ministry’s regulations regarding the power plant sub-sector’s carbon economic value. The event was broadcast on the directorate general's YouTube channel Info Gatrik on Tuesday.

Kusdiana said he was convinced that the consumption of electricity provided by other entities than PLN also increased.

Indonesia successfully overcame challenging times while maintaining positive economic growth and electric supply system capability, he added.

"Praise be to God, under President Jokowi’s (Joko Widodo’s) leadership, we have successfully overcome challenging times. We also maintained a dependable electricity supply while ensuring the electric price remains affordable for our people," Kusdiana said.

Earlier, state electricity company PT PLN said that the company's electricity sales increased during the post-COVID-19 economic recovery period.

The company's president director, Darmawan Prasodjo, said that the cumulative electricity sales reached 250.4 terawatt hour (TWh) as of November 2022, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 6.61 percent.

"This has been a positive signal for Indonesia's economic development," Prasodjo stated on December 24, 2022.

Economic recovery boosted electricity sales last year, he added.

While household electricity consumption dominated electricity sales, power use in the industry and business sectors improved compared with during the pandemic peak, the president director noted.

"PT PLN is ready to support economic recovery by providing a dependable electricity supply to help, particularly, the industry and the business sectors compete and grow better," Prasodjo remarked.
