Palu, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Central Sulawesi Government handed out food or basic necessities at affordable prices, specifically for people of middle to lower economic class, in a bid to meet the needs of poor households.

"Yes, for the initial phase, 200 food packages are stocked at a price of Rp25 thousand per package only for people of middle to lower economic class," expert staff of Central Sulawesi Governor M. Ridha Saleh noted in Palu on Monday.

Saleh stated that the actual price of each food package was Rp85 thousand (US$5.7), but assistance was extended, so the price went down to Rp25 thousand (US$1.67), and then they were sold to the public.

"All 200 of these packages have been sold to the public through a bazaar hosted in the Talise Village, Palu City," he revealed.

Saleh remarked that the bazaar was conducted with local youth organizations.

"Yes, the anniversary of one of the art galleries in Talise Village is a good momentum for synergy. This momentum also features dance and cultural activities unique to Central Sulawesi," he remarked.

Meeting the community's consumption needs as an effort to fulfill the people's basic rights was a priority in pursuing development, Saleh emphasized.

"The food sector is the focus of the Central Sulawesi government, which also includes efforts to control inflation," he pointed out.

Hence, the upstream sector that is correlated to food provision, including production, was consistently organized and improved, he noted.

Moreover, for distribution and marketing for downstream, one of the methods employed was by hosting markets that sold items at lower prices, he said.

"Cheap markets will consistently be hosted by the government in 2023 to ensure stability of prices for basic commodities as well as an effort, so that people can get good-quality food at affordable prices," he said.
