"Cumulatively, in 2022, there is an increase in the number of passengers in all transportation modes. Once again, this shows that this depicts the economy's (improvement) because people's mobility has increased as compared to the period of the last year," head of Statistics Indonesia Margo Yuwono noted here on Wednesday.
Yuwono detailed the data, which showed that 5.3 million people took domestic flights in December 2022. The figure was an increase by 14.26 percent as compared to that recorded in November 2022. Moreover, the number of passengers for international flights increased by 14.87 percent to reach 1.1 million.
"The increase is because there is the time of school holidays and new year that caused people to travel more," he explained.
In December 2022, as many as 1.7 million passengers took means of sea transportation to travel domestically, or an increase by 13.05 percent, as compared to November 2022. Moreover, only 26.9 million tons of goods were transported, a decrease by 2.49 percent.
During the period from January to December 2022, some 17.8 million passengers were recorded, an increase by 18.85 percent as compared to the same period in 2021, and 320.6 million tons of transported goods were recorded, an increase by 2.44 percent.
"This pattern always takes place in December in the transport of items, as compared to the month before," he pointed out.
Some 29.8 million train passengers were recorded in December 2022, an increase of 10.77 percent as compared to that in November 2022. Similarly, the amount of goods transported by trains increased by 8.87 percent to 5.8 million tons.
During the January-December 2022 period, the number of passengers reached 277.1 million, an increase of 85.04 percent as compared to the same period in 2021 and so were the figure of goods transported via train, recorded at 61.9 million tons, an increase by 15.41 percent.
