"AN is threatened with criminal sanctions under the Child Protection Law, Article 80, Paragraphs (1), (2), (3), and (4), with a maximum imprisonment of 15 years, plus one-third of the main sentence because the perpetrator is a biological parent; therefore, the prison sentence can be up to 20 years and/or a fine of Rp3 billion," the ministry's deputy of special protection for children Nahar said in Jakarta on Thursday.
Currently, AN has been named a suspect in the case and has been detained at Cimahi Police Station. Meanwhile, the victims’ stepmother has also been examined by police officials, who are continuing to investigate the case.
The ministry strongly condemns the alleged abuse perpetrated by AN against his two biological children, a 10-year-old girl, AH, and a 12-year-old boy, AMN, Nahar said.
The abuse claimed the life of the 10-year-old girl, while her older brother suffered serious injuries on his body, head, and face. He is currently receiving intensive treatment at a hospital in Cimahi.
"The ministry will continue to oversee the handling of violence cases and ensure that the child will receive treatment at the hospital, including assistance and recovery, both physically and psychologically. We will continue to coordinate with the Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) West Java and Cimahi city for steps to assist the victim," Nahar said.
The case came to light on February 6, 2023, when AN was reported for abusing his biological children in their rented house in Cimahi city.
AN's cruel treatment was allegedly caused by anger over his son taking money without permission.
The two children were living with their biological father and stepmother. Their biological mother works in Saudi Arabia.
