Jakarta (ANTARA) - The government is prioritizing incentives for the purchase of electric motorcycles, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated.

"The ones that would be prioritized first are motorcycles, for sure," the president noted in a statement after the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2023 here on Thursday.

Jokowi said that according to his earlier observation, people had to wait to buy electric vehicles. The waiting period reached two months for some, while others had to wait for six months, and some even had to wait for a year.

Public enthusiasm was high to purchase electric vehicles, as was apparent from the amount of orders placed, the president pointed out.

The head of state confirmed that the government will conduct a comprehensive calculation for the incentives scheme before they set it up.

"Incentives are still being calculated by the Finance Ministry as to how much is allotted for the cars and how much is for the motorcycles," he stated.

The government plans to establish a domestic electric vehicle ecosystem, so as to create an eco-friendly transportation system and forego the use of fossil-based fuels.

The consumption rate of fossil-based fuel oil, which could reach 70 billion annually, could be reduced should electric vehicles be adopted, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan remarked on a separate occasion.

"We always encourage (the growth of domestic) electric vehicles. In 2023-2024, we will expand its market share, 10 percent for electric vehicles, including for electric motorcycles," he remarked at the Mandiri Investment Forum (MIF) 2023 here on February 1.

He was confident that by doing so, they could reduce emissions and fuel oil imports.

The minister affirmed that they were pursuing efforts to meet the market share target. They are targeting to sell at least 600 thousand electric motorbikes and 100 thousand units of electric vehicles.

Efforts to reach that goal range from giving incentives for electric vehicle purchases, converting conventional motorbikes to electric motorbikes, and imposing less tax for electric vehicles, he remarked.

In 2021, the number of conventional motorbikes in Indonesia reached 118 million units, with annual sales reaching 6.5 million, and conventional cars reached 23 million units, with annual sales of some one million units.
