I appreciate this effort as a supporting step toward Indonesia's commitment to reducing ocean waste by up to 70 percent by 2025.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Environment and Forestry Ministry is encouraging efforts to manage waste, including toxic and hazardous waste, through the “Conscious Living” program.
The program aims to gather and manage waste in Jakarta this time round, in cooperation with a private company in the supermarket sector and a provider of household products.
"I appreciate this effort as a supporting step toward Indonesia's commitment to reducing ocean waste by up to 70 percent by 2025," Waste Management Director at the ministry, Novrizal Taher, said here on Monday.
At the kick-off of the “Conscious Living” program, he informed that the program is also meant to commemorate National Waste Awareness Day, which falls on February 21 every year.
During the event, head of the Jakarta Environment Office's waste management sub-coordinator, Rita Ningsih, said that the volume of waste entering Bantargebang Landfill from Jakarta has reached 7,500 tons per day.
Meanwhile, the volume of the trash heap in Jakarta has reached around 8,030 tons.
Thus, the “Conscious Living” program is expected to be very helpful in meeting the government's targets for handling waste, primarily in Jakarta.
"Plastic waste still continues to be an issue that has not been resolved. The government aims toward 30 percent waste reduction and 70 percent waste management by 2025," she said.
Under the “Conscious Living” program in Bandung, 65 tons of waste was collected. The program's target this time is to gather 650 tons of waste in Jakarta, or 10 times the amount collected in Bandung.
The program will not only focus on waste collection and recycling, but also on improving the involvement of scavengers.
As part of the process, the Octopus application will be used to form a more integrated waste management ecosystem, starting from the public, and scavengers, to waste managers.
