We will find the best solution to meet the increasing number of passengers due to the addition of lines.Jakarta (ANTARA) - The State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry said that it will explore other solutions to accommodate the rising number of Commuter Line (KRL) passengers after the government did not endorse a proposal for importing used trains from Japan.
"The Ministry of SOEs will fulfill what is demanded by the regulator. We will discuss all the required things," special staff to the SOEs Minister, Arya Sinulingga, said here on Thursday.
It is expected that all related parties, including the subsidiary of state railway company PT KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI), will suggest solutions that will be conveyed to the regulators later, he added.
"We will find the best solution to meet the increasing number of passengers due to the addition of lines," he said.
He informed that his side and related parties will discuss whether unoperated trains can be improved and utilized.
"However, we will still prioritize safety. In transportation, the most important thing is safety," he stressed.
The government is of the view that the Commuter Line facilities owned by PT KCI are still adequate to meet public transportation needs though it has not endorsed the proposed imports of second-hand trains from Japan.
Based on a review conducted by the government’s Development Finance Comptroller (BPKP), the number of operational KRL trains is 1,114, deputy for investment and mining at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Septian Hario Seto, informed.
The number does not include 48 units that have ceased operating and another 36 units whose functions have been temporarily converted.
Seto explained that based on the BPKP's report, the overloading of passengers only happens during peak hours.
The overall occupancy of KRL in 2023 is estimated to be 62.75 percent, 79 percent in 2024, and 83 percent in 2025.
In 2019, the operating KRL fleet amounted to 1,078 units, which was capable of serving 336.3 million passengers.
Meanwhile, 273.6 million passengers are predicted to ride the KRL trains this year, with the total fleet pegged at 1,114 units.
