"In total, there have been 362 thousand passengers of long-distance trains. Thus, we can say that in general, the situation is conducive and smooth," Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Operational Area (Daop) 1 at PT KAI Eva Chairunisa stated here on Friday.
The peak of the Eid exodus departure period occurred from April 18 to April 21, 2023, with 100-percent train seat occupancy.
Chairunisa noted that for train departures from Gambir and Pasar Senen stations as of April 21, 2023, the volume of passengers, on average, is the same since April 18.
"During the 2023 Eid transportation period from April 12 to May 3, in total, PT KAI's Daop 1 is readying up to one million long-distance train tickets, with 1,513 trips for departure from Gambir and Pasar Senen stations," she remarked.
The number already includes 303 additional trips to several popular destinations, such as Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, Blitar, Surabaya, and Malang.
According to Chairunisa, for this year's Eid exodus, KAI is readying up to one million tickets as a precautionary measure against a surge in the number of train passengers.
"Indeed, if we see the average number of passengers per day amid the Eid transportation period this year, it is experiencing an increase," she stated.
She further noted that during the peak period of the Eid exodus, the average number of train passengers departing reached around 42 thousand passengers. Meanwhile, last year, the average number was only around 36 thousand during the peak.
Moreover, this year, 70 trains are operated and depart from the Gambir and Pasar Senen stations every day, while last year, there were only 59 trains readied per day.
For this year's Eid al-Fitr, which will fall on April 22, the government has projected the number of Eid exodus travelers to reach 123 million. The figure reflects an increase as compared to the number of exodus travelers in 2022, which stood at 85 million.
