To realize the NZE, we (ANTAM) have a target of reducing two percent of carbon emissions every year.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government collaborated with state-owned mining company PT Aneka Tambang (ANTAM) to plant a thousand trees as part of efforts to realize net-zero emissions (NZE) in Jakarta by 2060.

"Thank you, ANTAM for helping Jakarta through this tree planting program by providing seedlings of fruit trees and other kinds of trees, which can benefit the community and the environment," acting governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono said in a statement issued on Friday.

He informed that the trees would be planted around Becakayu Toll Road, Duren Sawit sub-district, East Jakarta, and at a number of surrounding villages.

The acting governor assured that tree planting would continue to be carried out in various areas throughout the province.

Later, his administration will determine other planting locations and monitor the activity regularly and continuously.

The provincial government is expecting village heads to encourage all stakeholders in their respective areas to take part in the planting program. Meanwhile, the related provincial offices and agencies are expected to support the program according to their functions.

Meanwhile, residents who take part in the program can choose the kind of trees they want to plant, based on the characteristics of their environment.

Head of the Jakarta Provincial Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Fisheries (KPKP) Office, Suharini Eliawati, said that the areas around Becakayu Toll Road were potential locations for planting because the locations were close to water sources and received adequate sunlight.

According to the statement, different vegetables planted a few months earlier at the location were harvested and enjoyed by the community, which is managing them now.

Meanwhile, the director of operations and production at the enterprise, I Dewa Wirantaya, stated that the cooperation with the Jakarta government reflected the company's commitment to supporting the government’s target of realizing NZE by 2060.

"As a corporation, ANTAM has a social responsibility towards the environment. To realize the NZE, we (ANTAM) have a target of reducing two percent of carbon emissions every year," he continued.

ANTAM's support to the government in realizing the NZE is expected to encourage other state-run corporations to also contribute to making Jakarta greener, increasing food availability, and reducing poverty.
