Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Greater Jakarta Police said it is investigating the suspect involved in a recent shooting incident at the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Office, primarily his connection with terror groups.

“For now, we will probe the suspect's (connection to terror cells). We will also inquire with Densus 88 (Special Detachment 88) about his involvement in any terrorist cell. We cannot conclude anything yet right now,” Greater Jakarta Police chief, Inspector General Karyoto, informed at the Central MUI office here on Tuesday.

Before the shooting on Tuesday morning, the suspect entered the MUI office compound and told the staff he wanted to meet the MUI head, he said.

“The suspect entered the office compound, saying he wanted to meet the MUI head. However, because he did not explain the purpose, he was asked to remain outside,” he informed.

However, the suspect suddenly brandished his gun and started shooting, injuring an MUI staff who was shot in the back, the provincial police chief said.

“The suspect then left the building, but the staff inside pursued and seized him,” he added.

Karyoto said that the gun used by the suspect in the shooting was an airsoft gun, based on the Central Jakarta Police chief's report on the bullet magazines and small gas cylinders obtained from the suspect.

“(The gun) is commonly called an airsoft gun, not a firearm, but for detailed analysis, we will ask the forensic laboratory to inspect the gun,” he added.

Meanwhile, Central Jakarta Police chief, Senior Commissioner Komaruddin, disclosed that the suspect in the shooting incident was a 60-year-old man identified with the initial M.

"The suspect has been identified with the initial M, his age is around 60, and his ID card shows Lampung as his domicile," Komaruddin said.

The body of the suspect, who was killed in the incident, was taken to Kramat Jati Police Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, he informed.

The police chief added that the articles found in the suspect's bag included medicines, a bank account book, and letters.
