Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's specialty coffee transactions reached US$20.6 million or Rp305 billion at the Specialty Coffee Expo (SCE) in Portland, Oregon, the United States, this year.

"We need to consistently promote the exports of Indonesia's top products to ensure that it can meet the market demand, especially in the US, as Indonesia's second-largest export destination," the Trade Ministry’s director general of national export development, Didi Sumedi, said here on Tuesday.

Indonesian trade attaché in D.C., Wijayanto, said that the transaction value recorded at SCE 2023 reflects the huge overseas demand for Indonesian specialty coffee.

"Indonesian specialty coffee successfully made transactions worth US$20.6 million, up by 5.87 percent compared to the previous year at US$19.5 million," Wijayanto informed.

Eleven curated coffee producers/exporters from various regions of Indonesia participated in the SCE, he said.

The specialty coffee was sourced from West Java, Aceh Gayo, Mandailing, and Toraja.

Indonesia used the SCE to strengthen its coffee brand image by involving coffee business players, farmer groups, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Indonesia's participation in this year’s SCE was the result of a collaboration between the Indonesian trade representatives in the US, namely Indonesia’s trade attaché in D.C., the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC) in Los Angeles, ITPC Chicago, and the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in San Francisco.

According to Wijayanto, Indonesian trade representatives in the US will continue to pay attention to the capacity and development of MSME products to meet US demand.

The value of Indonesian coffee exports to the US reached US$319 million in 2022, an increase of 52.64 percent from US$209 million in 2021, according to the United States International Trade Commission.

"The export performance of coffee products needs to be maintained and improved to further strengthen Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports to the US market through collaboration with stakeholders," Wijayanto said.
