We want to implement the system, but we will consider Bali's support capacity to determine the exact quotaBadung, Bali (ANTARA) - Bali Governor I Wayan Koster said his side would discuss tourism issues caused by foreign tourists flouting local regulations and its solutions at a seminar on Bali's future development.
"(Errant tourists) will be one issue discussed at the Bali of the future (seminar) for the next 100 years," Koster stated here, Thursday.
Former president Megawati Sukarnoputri and other government and ministry officials would partake in the "Direction of the Future Bali Development" seminar to deliberate issues in Bali, he noted.
One of the solutions proposed by his side to address the tourism issue is introducing a quota system for foreign tourists for the next 100 years, the governor remarked, adding that the quota system will relieve Bali from the pressures of mass tourism.
He explained that the proposed quota system aims to reduce the risk of foreign tourists violating local laws, for instance, by working or opening a business while holding a tourist visa, which is illegal by Indonesian law, after running out of money in Bali.
"If we do nothing (on this issue), we are afraid more stingy tourists will arrive. (Because they have no money), they will eat only cheap foods and ride only motorbikes -- while violating laws. And in the end, they plunder ATMs (out of desperation)," Koster stated.
The governor said comprehensive solutions must be conceived to address locals' concerns about erratic foreign tourists' behavior that disrupt their lives.
The provincial authority will deliberate the proposed quota system with local tourism associations, including the Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI), and relevant stakeholders, he affirmed.
"We want to implement the system, but we will consider Bali's support capacity to determine the exact quota," Koster stated.
