The bank said some three factors caused their system to fail for a whole day.
Labuan Bajo (ANTARA) - State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir has asked state-owned Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) to improve services, including the quality of its IT security, to ensure that it does not experience a system outage again in the future.

BSI customers reported they were unable to access the Islamic bank's online banking system, which was disrupted by several issues on Monday (May 8, 2023) before recovering gradually.

"Good performance is not enough because services must continue to be improved," Thohir said here on Wednesday.

BSI is a milestone in Indonesia's banking sector as the bank, formed by the merger of three Islamic banking subsidiaries of state-owned banks, is now the sixth-largest bank in Indonesia, he said.

The minister added that he is confident the bank will become the fifth-largest bank nationwide soon.

Regarding the system disruption, he said an attack from external sources was one of the factors leading to the disruption.

"There was an attack, but I am not an expert on that aspect. The bank said some three factors caused their system to fail for a whole day," Thohir said.

"I saw the bank's president director and his team (working to resolve the issue), and we can see, as of yesterday morning or afternoon, if I am not wrong, the ATM system has recovered," he added.

Thohir said that IT system maintenance is part of the transformation of state-owned companies. He added he is confident that the BSI management will improve the bank’s system security and services for customers.

The minister said that before the system disruption, he had met BSI president director Hery Gunadi, who apprised him of the Islamic bank's development plan and strategy.

"Moreover, Mr. Tiko (deputy minister Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo) will embark on a roadshow for BSI. I will also depart for Doha tonight to meet Qatari investors; we are trying to enhance the funding basis for the BSI," he added.
