Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Communication and Information Ministry collaborated with the Nusantara Student Journalists Association (IJPN) to disseminate information on participation in the 2024 General Elections among young people in Jayapura on Wednesday.

"First-time voters are not only young people, there are adults who have never voted before, but this educational activity is (mainly) targeted at young people," a Young Staff Member at the Ministry Agus Tri Wuyono informed.

He said the activity is targeted at young people, especially first-time voters, because their percentage in the upcoming election is significant.

Young people, especially the millennial generation, will soon become the leaders of the nation, he added.

He said he expects that the IJPN community will continue to help the local government in increasing young people's participation in the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, IJPN chairperson Roberthus Yewen said that the information-sharing activity aimed to increase millennials' political literacy or understanding of politics.

The event also involved school students, college students, and young adults.

"So they can position themselves as intelligent young people in order to realize peaceful, safe, and successful elections," he said.

According to him, young people will lead the nation's development in the future, which means they will need to support, push, and actively participate in helping election organizers in realizing peaceful, transparent, and just elections.

"Thus, the elected leader is from the people, by the people, and serves the people," he said.

He also noted that in the current era of technological advancement, young people are prone to believing hoaxes.

"For that reason, this activity is aimed to increase the awareness of college students, young adults, and school students so that they can contribute to the success of the 2024 elections," he said.

Earlier, in April 2023, the ministry and IJPN jointly organized journalistic training for 100 college students in Papua.
