Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government is striving to improve the city's air quality through the electrification of TransJakarta buses as electricity is considered more environmentally friendly than conventional fuels.

Head of Environment and Green Open Spaces at the Jakarta Bureau of Development and Environment Silvana Tarigan said here on Wednesday that air quality issues are important and need to be discussed.

She is attending the 2023 International Conference on Climate and Clean Air in Bangkok from May 29 to June 2.

"We have strategic activities in the region, one of which is the transformation of TransJakarta buses, we actually want to (transform) any transportation mode too, like private cars," she said during an online discussion.

This year, her side is targeting to electrify at least 100 TransJakarta buses.

Tarigan said the transformation to improve air quality in the city of Jakarta and Greater Jakarta will be carried out by formulating an internal policy to replace officials' fuel vehicles with those that run on electric power.

However, she said that this transformation policy cannot be measured yet in terms of how much air quality will be improved and needs advice from academicians, stakeholders, and the community for a smoother implementation.

"The size (of air pollution reductions) cannot be calculated because it has not been implemented or measured; maybe if the volume is greater, it can be measured how far the reduction (of emissions) is," he said.

At the 2023 International Conference on Climate and Clean Air in Bangkok, Tarigan said that a community of Southeast Asian practitioners for clean air has been formed.

The collaboration has involved institutions, stakeholders, and communities to improve air quality, not only in Indonesia, but also in other Southeast Asian countries.

"We also learned from other countries' governments; how they work together with stakeholders, whether it is academicians or NGOs so that the policy is in sync with the community's needs," she explained.
