Jakarta (ANTARA) - Japan's Emperor Naruhito will visit Indonesia from June 17–23, 2023, to strengthen the friendly relationship between the two nations.

"Through this visit, we hope to strengthen friendly relationship with Indonesia," said an official from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs at an online press briefing, which was followed from here on Tuesday.

It is hoped that the visit would strengthen relations between the two countries for the better and become an opportunity for people in both countries to understand each other, including in terms of culture, he added.

The visit will be Emperor Naruhito's first to Indonesia. During the visit, he will be accompanied by Empress Masako Owada.

During the seven-day visit, they are scheduled to explore several locations in Jakarta, Bogor, Bekasi, and Yogyakarta.

Emperor Naruhito will arrive in Jakarta on Saturday afternoon (June 17). On June 18, he will first visit the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train depot, followed by the Pluit pump station in Jakarta.

The following day, he will attend a welcoming ceremony at Bogor Palace and have an audience with Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo.

At Bogor Palace, Emperor Naruhito will attend a luncheon hosted by President Jokowi and First Lady Iriana, followed by an audience with Indonesian people with connections to Japan in Jakarta in the evening.

The official part of the visit will take place on Tuesday (June 20), with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, and followed by a visit to the National Museum.

On the same day, the Emperor will also visit Darma Persada University and Vocational High School (SMK) Mitra Industri MM2100, a school established in the MM2100 industrial park and run by Japanese companies in Bekasi Prefecture.

Emperor Naruhito will also hold an audience with representatives of Japanese nationals in Indonesia and JICA Overseas Cooperation Volunteers in the evening.

On June 21, Emperor Naruhito will head to Yogyakarta for a visit to the Sabo Technical Center and Keraton Palace, followed by a banquet, which will be hosted by Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

On June 22, Emperor Naruhito will visit Borobudur Temple and leave for Jakarta in the afternoon. He will return to Japan on June 23.
