Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Cycling Federation (ISSI) said here on Tuesday that it has sent 14 elite and junior athletes to compete in the 2023 Asian Track Championships in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, from June 14–19.

The elites sent by PSSI comprise Bernard Benyamin Van Aert, Terry Yudha Kusuma, Ayustina Delia Priatna, Dhika Alief Dhentaka, Bintang Syawal, Fandi Jolata, Wiji Lestari, Ratu Afifah, and Imelda.

The juniors are Rizqy, Mohammad Seylhan, Bramantya Hartono Putra, Charisma Faiz Abadi, and Julian.

Head Coach of the Cycle Racing National Team, Dadang Haries Poernomo, said the 2023 Asian Track Championships is an important event because it is a part of the qualification for entering the Track Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, which will be held from August 3–13.

The 2023 Track World Championship is a part of the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers, he added.

Hence, he said he expects that Indonesian cycling athletes, especially those in the elite class, can maximize their performance at the Asian Track Championships in Malaysia.

"The Asian Track Championships is an essential series. Hopefully, our athletes Terry Yudha, Bernard Van Aert, and Ayustina, can be in the top three," Poernomo said.

Bernard Van Aert has ranked fourth in men's omnium with 1,949 points and 22nd in the men's madison with 3,030 points.

Meanwhile, Ayustina has ranked 16th in women's omnium with 1,392 points.

It is hoped that by participating in the 2023 Asian Track Championships, Indonesian athletes can collect as many points as possible to face the next world-level championship, Coach Poernomo said.

"By being in the top three, there will be huge chances of qualifying for the 2023 Track World Championship in Glasgow," he explained.

He also encouraged athletes to enhance their performance at international series events.

"Before (they can) enter the Olympics qualifiers, they (will) have to go through the world championship qualification first, and the key is in this Asian Track Championship," he added.
