Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government will send humanitarian assistance to Myanmar, which was battered by a cyclone recently, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy informed here on Wednesday.

"The government will send humanitarian assistance for the natural disaster that hit Myanmar last May (2023),” he said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Minister Muhadjir said that the focus of the assistance is to support the disaster management process from the emergency transition to recovery.

The assistance will cover reconstruction, food and nutrition, as well as essential health, including clean water, sanitation, and rapid response to infectious diseases.

"This assistance is being provided in order to follow up on President Jokowi’s (Joko Widodo’s) directives regarding plans to provide assistance to Myanmar," he said.

The assistance, which will be sent to Myanmar on June 26, 2023, will be in the form of material assistance valued at around Rp7 billion.

He described Indonesia's assistance as very strategic considering that Indonesia is also a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"Moreover, Indonesia is currently also the chair of ASEAN, so Indonesia's position is very strategic in providing this assistance," he said.

Rakhine State in Myanmar was hit by the Mocha Cyclone on Sunday (June 14). The disaster affected 5.4 million local residents and killed more than 400 people, attracting international attention, including Indonesia’s.
