Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta government-owned meat company Dharma Jaya is conducting a cheap market operation for chicken meat from June 28 to July 2, 2023, in a number of villages across the province.

The operation is being carried out to allow people to purchase chicken meat at affordable prices, in keeping with the directives of acting Jakarta governor Heru Budi Hartono.

"Dharma Jaya and the National Food Agency (Bapanas) are running the (cheap) market operation in several determined locations to make it closer to the community," the acting governor said in a press release issued on Wednesday.

On June 28, the program was carried out in five villages: Pondok Kopi (East Jakarta), Angke (West Jakarta), Kebon Sirih (Central Jakarta), Tanjung Priok (North Jakarta), and Manggarai (South Jakarta).

Meanwhile, President Director of Dharma Jaya Raditya Endra Budiman said his company deployed refrigerated trucks to sell the chicken meat at those locations from 9 a.m. Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB/UTC+7) to 2 p.m. WIB.

The market operation aimed to meet demand as well as stabilize the price of the commodity at the consumer level during the Eid al-Adha 1444 Hijri holidays, he added.

"It shows the commitment and support of Dharma Jaya as Jakarta’s regional-owned enterprise (BUMD) to fulfill the needs of chicken meat at affordable prices," Budiman said.

The government has announced a three-day national leave from June 28 to 30 to celebrate the Islamic holy day.

A resident of Tanjung Priok Village, Wiwit, said that she was grateful for being able to buy chicken at an affordable price during the market operation. She bought two chickens for Rp33 thousand (US$2.19) each.

"The price is more affordable and cheaper (under the market operation program) than the (conventional) market," she noted.

Wiwit said that she received information about the market operation from a social communication group in her neighborhood.
