Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has asked the government to accord serious attention to the General Election Supervisory Agency's (Bawaslu's) finding regarding voters without electronic identity cards (e-KTPs) who potentially won't be able to vote.

"Give serious attention to Bawaslu's finding regarding four million voters who potentially cannot exercise their right to vote in the upcoming elections (2024 general elections)," he said in an official statement received on Tuesday.

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration of the Home Affairs Ministry needs to boost and intensify population data recording, such as through services at its offices and door-to-door services, he added.

Soesatyo said he hopes that those efforts would help citizens participate in the 2024 general elections, which require voters to obtain e-KTPs.

He asked the General Elections Commission (KPU) to improve coordination with the Population and Civil Registration Offices to ensure the services and facilities for the e-KTP-making process are running well and optimally.

"This is because those facilities and services are essential for supporting the successful (implementation of) the upcoming 2024 general elections," he explained.

He also asked KPU to encourage and urge the community to make e-KTPs immediately.

He called for commitment from relevant parties to ensure that every Indonesian citizen has full access to cast their vote in the elections, which are scheduled to take place on February 14, 2024.

Earlier, in a statement received on Monday, Bawaslu member Lolly Suhenty advised the KPU to synchronize data with the Home Affairs Ministry, saying Bawaslu found that 4,005,275 eligible voters do not have e-KTPs.

She informed that the around 4 million eligible voters without e-KTPs include new voters who will turn 17 by February 14, 2024, and voters that have turned 17 but have not yet made an e-KTP.

On Tuesday, KPU member Betty Epsilon Idroos clarified that eligible voters who are 17 years old but have not obtained their e-KTP yet can still vote on election day by showing their Family Card (KK).
