Millennials should be insightful, tech-savvy, and data-based and not become a generation that is easily surprised, she stated during the Indonesia Data and Economic Conference Katadata event here on Thursday.
"Become the generation that knows the destination, design your own road, and make sure that Indonesia is headed toward the destination that we all agreed on," she emphasized.
The minister stressed the importance of possessing data-reading capability. This especially becomes important since Indonesia had endured three important crises, as it is able to read data and is willing to learn from experiences.
These three crises comprise the 1998 monetary crisis, 2008 global financial crisis, and COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the minister, the ability to read data and learn from experience is not just something that everyone owns. Several countries still fall into the same hole despite having faced crises on several occasions.
Mulyani drew attention to a country that is categorized as developed 100 years ago, though now, it has become a developing nation.
Meanwhile, when a country has already entered the middle-income trap, it becomes difficult for them to get out and become a developed nation.
"When they are trapped, the people become anxious and emotional. After they become emotional, they can explode. Hence, data becomes a good starting point. Countries that are willing to read data usually have their rationality trained and their emotion managed," she stated.
Meanwhile, Indonesia has entered into the upper-middle income country category, with the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita of US$4,580 in 2022, as announced by Bank Indonesia on July 1, 2023.
This indicates that Indonesia is showing good economic progress.
"We are allowed to have a good sense of optimism because Indonesia is included among a small number of countries that are willing to and able to learn from various shocks," the minister affirmed.
