Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics urged the people to actively report online gambling content and use the internet in a better and more productive way.

Online gambling content is spread across various platforms, not just website but also social media and even mass text messages, Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi stated while delivering a press statement here, Thursday.

On account of this, Setiadi urged the people to actively report online gambling content that they come across.

"We also ask for the people's complaint and participation in providing information if there is content that contains elements of gambling. We will immediately act on it," he remarked.

The ministry received complaints concerning the abuse of banking accounts to violate the law, including gambling content through the platform cekrekening.id, the minister stated.

During the period from January to July 17, 2023, Setiadi recorded that 1,859 complaints concerning the use of banking accounts for online gambling activities had been received by the ministry. This figure is part of the 1,914 complaints received by the ministry until 2023.

According to the ministry's record, a total of 846,047 pieces of online gambling content had also been taken down since 2018 until July 2023. Last week, on July 13-19, the ministry had taken down 11,333 pieces of online gambling content.

Setiadi stressed that the ministry will continue to monitor and take down access to every form of online gambling content as well as coordinate with law enforcement authorities.

Earlier, Setiadi had also announced that the ministry will cooperate with cellular operators to handle online gambling content promotion through mass short message (SMS blast) method, including WhatsApp blast, which the people often receive.
