In the two-year transition period, we are providing a chance to data managers to prepare the regulated things, one of which is readying data protection officers.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Informatics Ministry is taking two steps to support the effective implementation of the Personal Data Protection (PDP) Law in 2024—preparing derivative regulations and disseminating information, according to a ministry official.

"First, we are currently drafting a government regulation. We hope that it will be completed by the end of this year," Director General of Public Information and Communication at the ministry, Usman Kansong, said during a podcast discussion here on Saturday.

In addition, a presidential regulation is currently being drafted, and it is expected to be issued in September 2023, he added.

Kansong said that the presidential regulation will regulate an independent institution that will handle reports on data leaks. The institution will take full responsibility and report the results of its work to the president directly.

Meanwhile, information dissemination is being carried out not only for the general public, but also for electronic system providers (PSEs) or data managers and law enforcers, who will refer to the PDP Law in carrying out their tasks.

The PDP Law is being introduced to the general public so that if they fall victim to data leaks or know of data leak cases, they can refer to the law.

As for data managers, the dissemination is aimed at encouraging them to immediately fulfill essential requirements mandated by the PDP Law, which was passed in 2022.

"In the two-year transition period, we are providing a chance to data managers to prepare the regulated things, one of which is readying data protection officers," he said.

Kansong expressed the hope that the preparations will run well and offer stronger legal certainty to the community in terms of data protection.

"We hope the PDP Law can prevent data misuse and can protect people's personal data," he added.
