Even though the food that enters Jakarta, in general, is sourced from buffer regions and other regions, cooperation to procure food stock has been made.
"So far, 98 percent of Jakarta's food is sourced from outside (the region)," Head of Food, Marine, and Agriculture Security Office of Jakarta Suharini Eliawati said when confirmed here on Sunday.
She affirmed that, currently, her office is strengthening cooperation with food producer regions.
Jakarta's rice needs are also estimated to be safe, as the province has 414 hectares of paddy fields that can support the rice supply.
Eliawati noted that as Jakarta needs 300 tons of rice per day, in terms of production, paddy fields in the region cannot meet the needs.
Nevertheless, the Jakarta Provincial Government, through its Food, Marine, and Agriculture Security Office, has continued to strengthen cooperation with regions.
"We are supported by our food regional-owned enterprise (BUMD) Food Station; in addition to carrying out training, Food Station is also carrying out contract farming (food procurement contract)," she remarked.
In addition to relying on food stock from other regions, the office is also encouraging the community to plant plant seeds that take a short time to harvest to meet food needs in anticipation of the impact of the El Nino phenomenon in the capital city.
The office has distributed fast-harvesting plant seeds to the community, among them chilis and eggplants that can be harvested around three months after being planted.
