"It is impossible for any human to be a perfect candidate for a leader. There is also no prospective leader who is entirely bad," he stated during an online discussion on Tuesday.
He further added that every potential leader will have both good and bad aspects.
"If you believe that there are no good candidates, only bad ones, do not abstain. Choose one with fewer negative traits because we must have leaders," he emphasized.
Mahfud mentioned that those who choose not to vote will miss out, as elections not only aim to bring in good leaders but also to prevent unsuitable candidates from assuming leadership roles.
"There is a political philosopher who says, 'Elections are not just about finding a good leader, as it is difficult to bring in a good leader. But elections are about preventing malevolent individuals from becoming leaders,'" he remarked.
A competent candidate will not only consider the desires of their own group but also those of the general public, he added.
"It requires maturity from all of us, especially political parties, to ensure that the five-year democratic process runs smoothly and securely," Mahfud concluded.
