Depok, W Java (ANTARA) - A team of geoscience students from the University of Indonesia (UI) has finished second in the 2023 SEG Challenge Bowl World Finals, according to Deputy Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Abdul Haris.

The competition, whose final round was held in Houston, Texas, the US, on August 29, 2023, was an "international contest testing students' breadth and depth of knowledge about the field of geoscience", according to the official website of the competition.

Haris said that the achievement of the students of UI's Geoscience Department reflects the hard work and support of several elements at the department, faculty, and university in developing students' talent and supporting their self-actualization.

The UI team that took part in the competition, which applied a quiz-show format, was represented by Cecilia Patra Dewanty (Geophysics 2019) and Kevinsyah Aulia Lubis (Geology 2019), he informed here on Tuesday.

They demonstrated their dedication, depth of knowledge, and solid collaboration during the competition, which led to their emerging as the winners at the Asia-Pacific level and runners-up at the international level, he said.

The SEG Challenge Bowl was held by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), a non-profit organization.

At the regional competition on June 18, the UI team competed with teams from 14 universities from Indonesia, India, and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, at the international level, they competed with teams from 16 universities around the world, including the Colorado School of Mines (US), the University of Calgary (Canada), and Universidad Nacional de San Juan (Latin America).

"UI is very proud of having students who have not only gained excellent achievements at national levels, but have also shown their ability to compete and grab successes at international levels," he said.

ANTARA reported earlier that the University of Indonesia, whose main campus is located in Depok, West Java, has been adjudged the best university in the country.

In the annual ranking of global universities released by Webometrics in January 2023, UI was named the best university in Indonesia.

UI Rector Ari Kuncoro said in a recent statement that the university has maintained its commitment to becoming an innovative, independent, inclusive, dignified, and leading higher educational institution in Southeast Asia and the world.
