Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated on Tuesday that 4.4 million members of the Indonesian Civil Servants Corps (Korpri) are a driving force for Indonesia's progress.

"That is a huge number with significant influence to the nation's progress," he said during the opening of the Korpri National Working Meeting in Jakarta.

He emphasized that the civil servants (ASNs) would be the determining factor in the development of the nation due to the fact that they are the engine that powers the government.

"If the government is a vehicle, then (the members of) Korpri is like a machine," he said, adding that Indonesia needs such a machine that is powerful and efficient.

Jokowi emphasized that ASNs are expected to move swiftly while remaining efficient and not wasteful.

Another significant quality of Korpri is its ability to quickly adjust to any changes, Jokowi stated.

Jokowi said that he wants the ASN work ecosystem to be able to encourage performance in order to produce achievements and innovations.

He also called for a clear benchmark for the ASN performance to measure the achievements and innovations created.

"I often convey to the Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform that there must be a clear benchmark. There must be a clear reward," he noted.

The meeting on Tuesday was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy, Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Azwar Anas, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung.
