Jakarta (ANTARA) - The governments of Indonesia and Malaysia, at the 43rd General Border Committee Malaysia-Indonesia (GBC Malindo) meeting here on Thursday, announced that the two have reactivated 14 joint guard posts in the Indonesia-Malaysia border areas.

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto stated that the seven posts are located in Indonesia's territory, while the seven other posts are located in Malaysia's territory.

"There are 14 posts in border areas, seven from Malaysia and seven from Indonesia. They have been reopened," he stated during a press conference after the event.

Subianto noted that during this year's GBC Malindo meeting, the two countries explored opportunities to add more joint guard posts.

Indonesia and Malaysia had at least four joint posts in 2019. Two of the posts are located in Sei Menggaris and Long Midang, Nunukan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia, while the other two are located in Serudong and Seliku, Sabah, Malaysia.

However, the operation of joint posts in the border areas of Indonesia and Malaysia was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We have reactivated joint border posts that were closed due to COVID-19. No less important, we have also succeeded in encouraging border management activities and socio-economic development initiatives in the border areas of Malaysia and Indonesia," Subianto remarked.

On the same occasion, Malaysian Defense Minister Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan stated that the two countries agreed to continue the GBC Malindo meeting as well as the cooperation that has been established in border areas.

"This is also proof that the close cooperation and relations between Malaysia and Indonesia provide great benefits to both countries in maintaining security and safety in border areas," he said.

He noted that the 44th GBC Malindo meeting in 2024 is scheduled to be held in Malaysia.

"I hope that the upcoming meeting can reaffirm the commitment and cooperation between the two countries in terms of safety, security, and prosperity in border areas," the minister stated.

GBC Malindo was formed on August 11, 1966, after the restoration of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Malaysia.

GBC Malindo is a cooperation committee that manages partnerships, especially in the field of security in border areas. Under the cooperation framework, the two countries agree to hold a meeting annually.
