Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri on Wednesday announced Mahfud MD as the running mate of her party's presidential candidate, Ganjar Pranowo, for the 2024 General Elections.

Mahfud MD is currently serving as Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs.

"I am aiming for the greatest interests of the people, nation, and state; by saying bismillahirrahmanirrahim, the vice presidential candidate chosen by PDI-P who will accompany Ganjar Pranowo is Prof. Dr. Mahfud MD," Megawati announced at the PDI-P office, Jakarta, Wednesday.

The event announcing the vice presidential candidate was attended by the leaders of political parties supporting Pranowo's presidential candidacy.

Those party chairs comprised Megawati, United Development Party (PPP) Acting Chairperson Mardiono, People's Conscience Party (Hanura) Chairperson Oesman Sapta Odang, and United Indonesia Party (Perindo) Chairperson Hary Tanoesoedibjo.

Those party chairpersons held a meeting on Tuesday (October 17) in which a decision was taken on Pranowo's running mate.

The upcoming general elections are scheduled to be held on February 14, 2024, with around 204.8 million voters spread across 514 districts and cities across Indonesia. The number of voters also includes those living abroad in 128 countries.

According to the 2024 elections timetable, the registration of presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs will be open from October 19 to November 25, 2023.

Indonesia's election law determines that a presidential and vice presidential candidate pair is nominated by a political party or a coalition of political parties, with at least 20 percent of the House of Representatives (DPR) seats or 25 percent of votes in the previous election of DPR members.

Hence, a presidential and vice presidential candidate pair must receive support from at least 115 of 575 parliament members or from a political party or a party coalition that secured at least 34,992,703 votes in the 2019 General Elections.
