The water bombing operation has been running and is planned to be done 50 timesJakarta (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) dropped 40 thousand liters of water using a helicopter to put out the Rawa Kucing landfill fire in Tangerang City, Banten, on Monday.
Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center Abdul Muhari noted in his statement received here on Monday that the water bombing operation was conducted to support fire control at the Rawa Kucing Landfill.
"The water bombing operation has been running and is planned to be done 50 times. Each water bombing is as much as 800 liters of water," he stated.
Water bombing conducted by the helicopter sent by BNPB started at 7 a.m. and would last until 5 p.m. local time on Monday.
Muhari remarked that BNPB's waterbombing helicopter assistance aimed to help Banten Province in controlling the fire at the Rawa Kucing landfill.
"BNPB sent a unit of waterbombing helicopter from Bali Province," he stated.
Earlier, the Tangerang Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) targeted to extinguish the landfill fire in the next three to five days.
There were still fire spots as of Monday, while the Environment and Forest Ministry and BNPB personnel have been deployed to help extinguish the fire with the "injection" system and also using the waterbombing helicopter.
In addition, a joint team of 600 military and police personnel was fielded to control the fire.
At least 10.1 hectares had been reportedly burned in the 34-hectare landfill.
Tangerang Mayor Arief R. Wismansyah hoped that assistance from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry would speed up fire control.
"The current condition in the landfill (is that) there is still fire at the bottom (of the garbage pile). Hopefully, this assistance can overcome the fire at the Rawa Kucing landfill," he stated.
