Do not let the locals' cultures to get eroded when this super-priority tourist destination attracts more visitors from various countries to comeMagelang, C Java (ANTARA) - An interdisciplinary team of experts from Indonesia, France, Thailand, Italy, and Japan discussed conservation issues of Borobudur Temple during an international meeting held in Magelang, Central Java, on Oct 23-27.
Conservation and stone specialists as well as members of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) were among participants at the 8th International Experts' Meeting on Borobudur.
At the meeting, they discussed issues related to physical conservation of Borobudur and community participation in the temple's conservation efforts, Sub-Coordinator of the Borobudur World Heritage and Cultural Heritage (MCB) Wiwit Kasiyati stated here, Tuesday.
"Now, the community participation is a number one priority. We are no longer able to think about the temple's physical conservation only. We must also think about the local communities," she emphasized.
The Borobudur relief panels, for instance, could be showcased in the locals' art and culture, she stated.
In this regard, Kasiyati highlighted the importance of preserving the locals' cultures, as Borobudur has become one of Indonesia's super-priority tourist destinations that will attract more international visitors to come.
"Do not let the locals' cultures to get eroded when this super-priority tourist destination attracts more visitors from various countries to come," she affirmed.
Borobudur is one of the world's important Buddhist temples and has been designated by UNESCO as one of its world heritage sites since 1991.
