Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) will deploy its computer security incident response team (CSIRT) to deal with potential cyberattacks, including those involving artificial intelligence (AI), during the 2024 General Elections.

"We have created road maps and various frameworks. We have divided them into three scopes, namely, before the elections, during the elections, and after the elections," BSSN spokesperson Ariandi Putra told ANTARA after the 2023 Security Day event here on Tuesday.

Regarding the BSSN's efforts to bolster the computer system of the General Election Commission (KPU), he said that the CSIRT team will function as a deterrent and mitigate potential cyberattacks from outsiders.

When traffic anomalies are detected in the KPU's computer system, the team will collect evidence and related data and then report them to the commission for follow-up action.

The reported findings will include recommendations from the BSSN, for instance, in the form of an Information Technology Security Assessment (ITSA) so that the KPU's electronic system can continue to operate well.

"We will also send a tactical team to carry out various recoveries when incidents occur," he said.

Putra informed that another effort to protect the KPU's system from data breaches and manipulation has been the creation of a scheme based on cybersecurity threat trends in 2023.

The scheme would include cyberattacks that are technical in nature, such as website defacement, malware attacks, and phishing, as well as those that are social, such as hoaxes and indoctrination, including AI-based attacks.

Furthermore, even though the CSIRT is playing a role in protecting the general elections' security system in cyberspace, the main control, as the owner of the electronic system, is still held by the KPU, as regulated by Government Regulation Number 71 of 2019.

The spokesperson explained that the tasks and functions of his agency during the stages of the elections will include strengthening the security system, carrying out assessments, and providing coaching and training to relevant ministries and agencies.

For the prevention of attacks and monitoring of the general elections, the BSSN has formed a general election task force, which started to work from the beginning of this year and will continue until the completion of the inauguration of the new president and vice president in October 2024.

"If a cyber incident and others occur, we have prepared all the road maps, including cooperation with various stakeholders such as the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), the KPU, including the Ministry of Communication and Information," he said.
