Jakarta (ANTARA) - The President has the prerogative to choose the candidate for the post of the National Defense Forces (TNI) commander, the coordinator of advisors to the President, Ari Dwipayana, informed here on Tuesday.

He made the statement in response to the selection of Chief of Army Staff, General Agus Subiyanto, as the TNI commander candidate. The current commander, Admiral Yudo Margono, will retire soon.

"The President has the prerogative to choose the (candidate for) TNI commander by taking into account various aspects, namely rank qualifications, leadership, professionalism, rotation within the TNI branches, and based on the country's strategic defense needs," he expounded.

The President's letter regarding the selection of General Subiyanto as a candidate for the post of TNI commander has been received by the House of Representatives (DPR).

"I announce the candidate to replace the TNI Commander, Admiral Yudo Margono; the name proposed by the President is General Agus Subiyanto, who is currently serving as the chief of Army staff," House Speaker Puan Maharani said at the House's plenary meeting.

According to her, the President must submit the name of the candidate to the House.

"TNI Commander Admiral Yudo Margono will enter retirement on November 26 (2023), his birthday," she said.

The House will then follow up on the proposal for the new TNI commander. Maharani said that the House will process it in accordance with the existing mechanism, namely through a fit and proper test.

As is already known, General Agus Subiyanto was inaugurated as the new chief of Army staff on October 25 in place of General Dudung Abdurachman, who is retiring.

House Deputy Speaker Lodewijk F. Paulus said that his side will soon process the proposal for the appointment of General Subiyanto as the candidate for the TNI commander post.

Paulus informed that his side has up to 20 days to arrange a schedule for Subiyanto's fit and proper test.
