Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), at the APEC Economic Leaders Retreat, drew attention to conditions in the Gaza Strip, as the rights of people were not being respected, let alone the rights to develop.

"Before we start our topic of inclusive development, let us think for a moment about the people in Gaza. Let alone development, currently, their right to life is not respected," the president noted in a press release here on Saturday.

Jokowi was speaking at the APEC Economic Leaders Retreat in San Fransisco on Friday (November 17).

Hence, President Jokowi urged APEC leaders to take action in order to stop the war, call for a ceasefire, and ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid for the people in Gaza.

Regarding inclusive development, Jokowi stated that APEC should prioritize the realization of opportunities and inclusive and resilient economic growth.

President Jokowi affirmed that the Asia Pacific has huge potential, as the region contributes 62 percent of the global GDP, and 48 percent of the world trade comes from APEC countries.

"Amid an uncertain world situation, APEC needs to prioritize the realization of opportunities and inclusive and resilient economic growth that can be achieved together," he stated.

To achieve this, President Jokowi underscored the need for a spirit of collaboration. He said that togetherness and strategic trust are necessary to realize the APEC 2040 vision.

"This is key to maintaining the relevance of APEC as a premier economic forum in the region," he explained.

The head of state underscored the need to strengthen the region's economic resilience in maintaining global supply chains.

The dependence on and dominance of global supply chains on several major economies should also be reduced, he stressed.

"Developing countries must play a role and participate in global supply chains, including through downstreaming, to make development leaps," he remarked.
