Cilacap (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast extreme weather in many regions of Central Java Province from January 4–10, 2024, which could trigger a hydrometeorological disaster.

“Even today (January 4), moderate- to high-intensity rain with lightning and strong winds may potentially fall in Central Java highlands, the southern and western part of the province, and some other regions,” head of the BMKG technician group at Tunggul Wulung Cilacap Meteorology Station, Teguh Wardoyo, informed in Cilacap on Thursday.

He said there has been potential for extreme weather since late December 2023, and it is predicted to last until January 10, 2024.

Based on data released by the BMKG, the potential for extreme weather has been triggered by the dynamics of the atmosphere. The Asian winter monsoon, which is associated with the west wind season, is starting to show its impact, namely the potential increase of moist air masses around Indonesia.

“Thus, (we) predict that the growth of rain clouds in January will be intense,” Wardoyo stated.

Meanwhile, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity has started to enter the Indonesian region. In the following week, it could indirectly trigger an increase in moderate- to high-intensity rains in many regions, Wardoyo informed.

The condition is supported by the activity of Rossby waves in the western Indonesian region, which will last for the next five days.

“Another factor that has also strengthened the potential is the formation of wind convergence patterns and wind turns around the regions of Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan,” he stated.

Wardoyo advised people, especially those living in places prone to hydrometeorological disasters, to remain alert to the potential for floods, flash floods, landslides, moving grounds, and tornadoes during moderate- to high-intensity rains.
