He made thisstatement during the Ministers’ Closed Consultations on the Interim Report of the UN Secretary General's High-level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence held in Slovenia on Sunday (February 4).
"We affirmed that global AI governance is supposed to pay attention to the interests of the Global South," he noted in a press release from his office on Monday.
He explained that the Global South comprises developing countries in Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific, which have been showing continued progress in terms of the utilization of AI technology in various sectors.
He underscored that the international community should ensure the implementation of equality among nations to enable the Global South to take part in driving global AI development.
"A more fair approach is required to pave the way for global AI governance that respects equality and pays attention to the Global South," he pointed out.
In response to the Global South’s optimism about advancing AI technology, he stated that the Indonesian government suggests providing equal access to technology for all nations through transfers of knowledge and technology.
He expressed hope that the Global South would play a greater role in global AI development rather than merely existing as markets for developed countries.
"The Global South should not be viewed as mere markets. We need equality in international AI governance," he said.
