Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin highlighted the importance of parents and families possessing proper understanding of children's nutritional needs to prevent stunting cases, growth disruption caused by chronic malnutrition.
"Stunting prevention starts from the need for parents and families to comprehend the importance of nutrition and lead their children to routinely consume nutrition-rich food," he noted in his virtual opening speech for a nutrition dissemination event in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He revealed that six out of 10 Indonesian children in the age of 6-24 months do not receive nutritional foods for complementing breast milk, thereby resulting in an increase in stunting risks in two-year-old children.
Hence, to this end, he underlined the vital role of education in protecting Indonesian children from stunting cases.
"Collaboration among stakeholders is needed to intensify educational activities and assistance (for parents)," he pointed out.

On the same occasion, Head of the National Population and Family Planning Agency's (BKKBN's) Planning Bureau, Wahidin, stated that the government had been striving to suppress Indonesia's stunting prevalence to 14 percent this year.
"We are taking a pentahelix approach for our efforts, meaning the government is working with various stakeholders. Our goal is to ensure that the stunting prevalence does not exceed 14 percent this year," he explained.
He further urged prospective brides to initially check their physical and mental conditions before proceeding with marriage.
"Three months prior to marriage, brides need to ensure that they are healthy, so they can give birth to healthy children," he stressed.
Wahidin then emphasized the need to guide pregnant women to fulfill sufficient nutrition intake while urging parents to improve their understanding of nutrition, so they know how to acquire nutritional foods at affordable prices.
He also called on parents to pay close attention to their children during their first 1,000 days of life in a bid to ensure successful physical and mental growth.
The official then reminded parents of the importance of maintaining balance in their children's consumption to prevent obesity.
"It is necessary to feed children with varied foods to ensure balanced nutrition. That way, we can protect children both from stunting and obesity," he concluded. (INE)
