We can provide scholarships for them to study halal tourism at our tourism polytechnics with a halal tourism major.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy is ready to help university students from ASEAN countries pursue tourism studies in Indonesia, Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has said.

The minister informed that many university students in ASEAN countries are keen to study tourism in Indonesia, as was evident during his last visit to Laos.

"I recently visited Laos and saw many Laotian students enthused about studying halal tourism. We can provide scholarships for them to study halal tourism at our tourism polytechnics with a halal tourism major," Uno said here on Friday.

As part of its commitment to implementing the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (ASEANMRA-TP), the ministry is ready to provide scholarships to students from ASEAN countries whose governments do not provide such funding, he informed.

Moreover, Indonesia's tourism education has become a barometer for tourism and creative economy education development in ASEAN, he highlighted.

"We have become the barometer for tourism in ASEAN, and our creative economic sector has been very inclusive. Let us optimize our tourism polytechnics as centers of excellence not only for Indonesia, but for ASEAN," Uno said.

He further said that he has instructed tourism polytechnics to provide scholarships to at least one student from each ASEAN country.

"I have instructed Bandung NHI Tourism Polytechnic (to admit) at least one (student) from every ASEAN country; the scholarship of students (from ASEAN countries) who do not need it can be transferred to other students in need," the minister added.

For the 2024–2025 academic year, the ministry has prepared scholarships for a total of 3,860 students to enable them to study at six tourism polytechnics: Bandung NHI Tourism Polytechnic, Bali Tourism Polytechnic, Makassar Tourism Polytechnic, Medan Tourism Polytechnic, Palembang Tourism Polytechnic, and Lombok Tourism Polytechnic.
