Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Information Budi Arie Setiadi urged press companies to continue to innovate in producing journalistic works after the regulation on "Publisher Rights" was passed.

He highlighted the importance of enforcing regulations regarding publishers' rights to ensure that press companies in Indonesia can continue to exist with quality content and sustainable business.

"I ask everyone to interpret Publisher Rights as a step forward that needs to be continued,” Setiadi remarked in Jakarta, Monday.

“With the next steps forward, I encourage press companies in parallel to continue to innovate on various fronts to respond to opportunities and challenges in a progressive and dynamic future," he affirmed.

According to Setiadi, the presidential regulation on publishers' rights, which is planned to be ratified on Tuesday (Feb 20), is an affirmative policy prepared by the government for the industry.

The minister remarked that the regulations were designed to create equality between local mass media industry players and digital platform companies to ensure that digital disruption does not erode the mass media industry.

Setiadi stated that the regulation was intended to support mass media companies in maintaining their business existence and developing it.

He called on the press and mass media company managers to prepare themselves well during the transition period towards full implementation of regulations regarding the publishers' right.

"I ask that the media company optimize the transition period of six months to prepare its implementation, especially the committee and business processes within it. I think six months is not a long time, so it requires fast and precise work," Setiadi stated.
