Bandung, W Java (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has assured that the government will repair homes damaged by the whirlwind that struck the Bandung and Sumedang districts of West Java on Wednesday (February 21, 2024).

Speaking to journalists in Bandung district on Friday, deputy for BNPB's Emergency Response Division, Major General Fajar Setyawan, said that the government will provide financial assistance based on the degree of damage.

For homes with minor damage, the government will provide Rp15 million, while for homes with moderate and serious damage, the government will dole out Rp30 million and Rp60 million, respectively, he informed.

"None of the affected residents will be relocated as their houses can still be used after getting renovated," he added while instructing the West Java Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) to verify all damaged homes.

The BPBD-West Java Office's preliminary verification results show that the whirlwind damaged 611 homes.

Meanwhile, the Bandung district government has declared a 14-day disaster emergency status in areas affected by the whirlwind, which will be effective from February 22 to March 6.

The disaster emergency status is needed to allow the district government to serve all affected residents optimally, acting head of the Bandung Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Uka Suska Puji Utama, said.

The recent whirlwind damaged 608 houses in the sub-districts of Rancaekek, Cicalengka, and Cileunyi, with 1,879 residents affected by the disaster, he added.

To assist affected residents, the BPBD-Bandung District Office has set up several emergency tents and public kitchens, Utama informed.

ANTARA has reported earlier that various parts of Indonesia are prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and whirlwinds.

On November 2, 2020, for instance, a whirlwind swept through two neighborhoods of Belinyu sub-district, Bangka district, Bangka Belitung Islands province, following torrential rains.

The whirlwind damaged 45 houses and four buildings housing motorcycle showrooms, according to the Bangka Belitung Islands Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).
