According to our estimation, the demand for fish will increase by 10 percent during Ramadan and by 20 percent during Eid.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has managed to secure ample stocks of fish to meet public demand during this year's Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry informed in Jakarta on Thursday.

As per official data, the country is expected to produce 3.10 million tons of fish during the March–April period, while the projected demand for fish for the same period is pegged at 2.46 million tons.

"We have ample stocks of fish. According to our estimation, the demand for fish will increase by 10 percent during Ramadan and by 20 percent during Eid," director general for the strengthening of the competitiveness of marine and fishery products at the ministry, Budi Sulistyo, informed.

He noted that the projected increase in fish demand points to high enthusiasm among the people about consuming fish during the Islamic holy month.

Fish is affordable, easy to cook, known for its high level of nutrition, and has been widely distributed to Indonesian markets, he said.

Sulistyo then shared the results of data collection conducted by his office at around 200 warehouses, saying that the warehouses witnessed a surge in supply and a decline in prices in early January.

He added that the stocks of fish stored in the frozen warehouses were dominated by various types of fish, such as mahi-mahi, grouper, tuna, channa, decapterus, squid, snapper, skipjack tuna, and milkfish.

"The point is that we can be optimistic about the stocks and prices of fish being ample and stable during the Ramadan-Eid period," he said.
