Mataram (ANTARA) - A total of 27 houses were damaged in Central Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), as a result of a whirlwind hitting the region on Monday (March 11), the NTB Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated.

Based on a report received from the regional agency in Mataram City on Tuesday, the whirlwind wreaked havoc in Central Lombok at 4 a.m. local time, leaving no injuries or casualties.

"Hence, the whirlwind affected a total of 27 houses or households. However, no injuries, casualties, and missing persons were recorded," Head of NTB BPBD Ahmadi stated in Mataram.

He explained that the natural disaster had damaged houses and caused trees to fall in 15 villages scattered across six sub-districts.

"The whirlwind left the roofs of residents' houses damaged and several trees fallen in a number of locations," he pointed out.

Ahmadi elaborated that the natural disaster ravaged 15 villages in the sub-districts of Pujut, Praya, Southwest Praya, West Praya, East Praya, and Jonggat.

Although the situation in the six affected sub-districts has returned to being conducive, the official appealed to residents to stay vigilant about the potential of hydrometeorological disasters.

"We would like to urge all NTB residents to stay alert, considering that we have entered the rainy season, and some regions are still in a transitional period," he emphasized.

According to Ahmadi, local residents should be aware of the threats of sudden storms, floods, and landslides during the rainy season and transitional period.

Earlier, on Monday, Head of the BPBD of Central Lombok Ridwan Maruf reported that his office and relevant stakeholders had deployed personnel to deal with the fallen trees to prevent traffic congestion and further damage.

"Joint officers have started moving out the fallen trees to protect residents from likely danger," he stated in Central Lombok.
