Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy established collaboration with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to support the development of halal tourism and halal creative economy.

"Today, we signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the MUI. Considering that the tourism and creative economy sectors have been growing rapidly, we deem it necessary to ask the MUI for guidance," Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno remarked here on Tuesday.

He highlighted that the MoU would facilitate the two institutions to cooperate in developing halal tourism activities through various joint activities, such as capacity-building and information exchange.

Uno noted that the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry had been consulting with the MUI regarding actual issues related to halal tourism and the creative economy, adding that his office has been implementing all suggestions received from the council.

He stated that the MoU was signed to formally establish cooperation in the development and promotion of halal tourism and the creative economy.

Under the MoU, he elaborated that the MUI will provide suggestions and inputs related to policies implemented by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy.

He then expressed hope that the formal cooperation between the ministry and the council would result in the creation of business and job opportunities and lead Indonesia to become the world's best halal tourism destination.

"With this MoU, we will discuss matters more comprehensively and create more breakthroughs that are consistent with the religious values sought to be applied in tourism and creative economic activities," he stated.

MUI Deputy Chairman Anwar Abbas, for his part, stated that the cooperation is expected to enhance the capacity of tourism business actors and elevate the living standards of people.

He also expressed hope that Indonesia would stand among the world's top four halal tourism destinations before 2040.
