"The discussion of this Bill is an effort to make Jakarta a world-class city while maintaining a large economic movement," he informed at a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Thursday.
He said he hopes that Jakarta will generate economic activity not only within its limits or Indonesia, but emerge as an important economic center in Southeast Asia, and even, the world.
So far, Jakarta has made a significant contribution to the Indonesian economy. As per data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), in 2023, around 17 percent of the Indonesian economy was supported by Jakarta.
Therefore, Karnavian expressed the hope that Jakarta can continue to maintain its economic contribution after the relocation of Indonesia's capital to IKN Nusantara, East Kalimantan.
"We want Jakarta to be able to compete with other world-class cities," the minister added.
For this reason, he said, the DKJ Bill will accommodate adjustments to regulatory policies regarding Jakarta's special region status after it ceases to be the national capital.
According to him, the Bill is also necessary following the issuance of Law Number 21 of 2023 concerning amendments to Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning National Capital (IKN Law).
"The government and DPR have the same vision for Jakarta to have a special status after the capital city relocation. Jakarta should be able to improve economic growth and will have an impact on increasing the contribution of Indonesia's gross regional domestic product," Karnavian said.
The 14th DPR Plenary Meeting for the IV Session Period for the 2023–2024 Session Year approved the Level II decision-making on the DKJ Bill to be passed into law.
With the DKJ Bill cleared by the DPR, President Joko Widodo now needs to issue a presidential decree before the capital can be officially moved from Jakarta to IKN.
