The regional government's secretary, Beny Suharsono, said on Monday that the large volume of waste needs to be anticipated because Yogyakarta will welcome as many as 11.7 million travelers during the Eid holiday period.
"We are taking these steps to ensure those returning to Yogyakarta for Eid will not encounter piles of uncollected garbage," he added.
He said that the local governments of Bantul, Sleman, and Yogyakarta City are utilizing the Piyungan Integrated Waste Management Site (TPST) in Bantul as part of the anticipatory efforts.
Yogyakarta City has also emptied waste depots ahead of Eid this year. With this, it is hoped that the volume of waste during the Eid exodus period can be controlled.
"Because the 11.7 million travelers will potentially result in the generation of huge amounts of waste," he explained.
He said that the volume of waste at depots in Yogyakarta city could reach 1,000 tons.
He added that several efforts to reduce the volume of waste will continue to be maximized until travelers leave the province.
"We anticipate their arrival at and until their return from Yogyakarta with well-managed waste," he said.
Meanwhile, acting head of the Yogyakarta Tourism Office, Anita Verawati, said that most tourist destinations and hotels in Yogyakarta already have independent waste processing systems. This way, waste from the tourism sector can be suppressed.
More waste actually comes from the household sector, not tourism, she added.
