Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has asked regional governments to anticipate additional waste generation from people's exodus activities during the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

The ministry issued Circular Number 5 of 2024 on Waste Handling during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr Holiday on March 28, director of waste handling at the ministry, Novrizal Tahar, said when contacted by ANTARA here on Wednesday.

"In the circular, there is an important thing on how regions can prepare a task force; we also emphasize it in the circular," he added.

In the circular, the ministry has appealed to regional governments to form a task force post for handling waste from April 3-April 18 to anticipate the accumulation of waste in certain areas.

The ministry has also asked regional heads to support and monitor waste handling, especially on Eid exodus routes and buffer regions, throughout the Eid exodus and Eid holiday periods.

Regional governments have also been directed to ensure special waste management at busy travel points, including bus terminals, train stations, ports, and airports in their respective regions.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has also appealed to regional governments to provide segregated waste storage facilities. To anticipate difficulties that may be faced by travelers in disposing of their waste, it has been deemed necessary for officers to collect waste.

Those appeals have been made to support the Minimal Waste Exodus movement that has been promoted by the ministry since 2018 and incorporated into the National Exodus Program.

"We hope that regional governments are ready to anticipate issues related to waste in regions that emerge due to the exodus and others," he said.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has projected potential waste generation of 58 million kilograms during the 2024 Eid al-Fitr exodus and return period, with around 193.6 million people participating in the exodus based on the Ministry of Transportation's estimate.
