Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani called on the government to ensure that the prices of staple goods are affordable and the community’s purchasing power remains strong ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

“That way, the community would be able to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with great joy,” the speaker stated while delivering her remarks at a DPR plenary meeting here on Thursday.

Maharani emphasized that the DPR pays great attention to the community’s current economic conditions amid the impact of the global economic slowdown.

Apart from that, Indonesia is also facing domestic challenges, such as the political dynamics after the 2024 General Elections, an increase in the prices of staple goods, and the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar that has the potential to weaken.

The House speaker pointed out that those conditions affect the community directly, including a decline in purchasing power and welfare.

To this end, she said, the DPR is urging the government to maintain economic stability in the country.

“It is done by keeping inflation low, strengthening economic growth based on domestic factors, and protecting the purchasing power of poor and vulnerable communities, and the government must also accelerate structural reforms that can bolster the national economy,” she remarked.

Earlier, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan stated that the prices of most food staples tended to decline, especially in Java and Sumatra, ahead of the 2024 Eid al-Fitr, which is projected to fall on April 10.

"On the 21st day of Ramadan, food prices tend to decline, according to the Statistics Indonesia (BPS)," he remarked at a meeting for securing food supply and prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr in Jakarta on Monday (April 1).

Hasan noted that recently, food prices were always under control during holidays, such as Eid al-Fitr, Christmas, and New Year. Nevertheless, he reminded all parties to remain vigilant amid the potential of food price hikes due to the high demand ahead and after Eid.
