"We have standardized and prepared a standard operating procedure (SOP) for transporting electric vehicles at ferry crossing points," said Yusuf Nugroho, head of the vehicle test sub-directorate at the ministry, at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.
He said that his ministry has anticipated issues related to the safe transport of EVs on ferries. The SOP that has been prepared will not only apply to battery-based EVs, but also hybrid EVs.
The ministry has also readied mitigation protocols for crossings for EVs used in the exodus.
"There's no need to worry about using EVs when crossing," he said.
On the same occasion, Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy Coordinator for Transportation and Infrastructure at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, said that incidents such as crashes and charging-related mishaps can cause electric cars or EVs to catch fire.
"Therefore, if EVs are in ferries, they are supposed to be static and not be charged during transit. It is supposed to be safe," he explained.
A survey by the Ministry of Transportation showed that 193.6 million people are estimated to participate in the Eid homecoming exodus, which is expected to fall on April 10.
The ministry said that around 4,000 electric cars are estimated to be used during Eid holidays in Indonesia.
